"The Champions Are Crowned"
The 15th annual Arboretum Club Championship has been completed and it is now time to recognize all of you for playing and making the event very special. The main goal behind hosting an event like this is not only to provide you with a competitive tournament, but also an opportunity to meet some new players. We hope all of you had a great time and we look forward to continuing the tradition each season. On Saturday, there were many front-runners that jumped out early and capitalized on the favorable weather conditions. There were some great scores fired, including Jim Werner's gross score of 73. This score was the lowest score of the entire tournament and proved that this was the year Jim was going to win the Championship Flight. In the "A" Flight, Robert Santini was the only player in his flight to break into the 70's with a fantastic score of 79. This score gave him a one shot lead over Tom Cromeans heading into Sunday. The "AA" Flight had some hot players as well, including John Mueller and Dave Kalish. Both players posted gross scores of 88, which was one shot clear of Jack Gilbert's score of 89. As the Ladies Flight concluded their play on Saturday, it was Bernadette Devonshire who shot a gross score of 86 and had a two shot lead heading into Sunday.
On Sunday, the weather changed and became very challenging to all of the players. Not only was it a challenge to stay dry, but also to concentrate. The scores on Sunday came in a little higher due to the adverse weather and some mounting pressure. The Championship Flight had a couple of players trying to sneak in the back door with John Gerlesits shooting 76 and Mike Gilligan shooting 75. However, Jim Werner played very consistently and shot 77. This gave him a gross, two-day total of 150, and a well deserved First Place Finish! In the "A" Flight, the question remained if Bob Santini can hold a lead going into the second round.
